Rain yesterday afternoon, overnight and today led to the International Ski Federation's decision to cancel all Vitranc Cup competitions this season.
The competition course was still suitable for a slalom race based on yesterday's conditions, but the constant rain yesterday afternoon, overnight and this morning has left the course too damaged to be ready for competitive skiing.
Gregor Benedik, President of the OK Pokal Vitranc, emphasised, "The weather has not been kind to the Vitranc Cup this year. After yesterday's slalom race, the rain overnight and this morning washed away a good part of the snow cover and softened the snow to the point where it could not be prepared for safe skiing by the competitors. We did our best to keep the race going, but nature was much stronger than us this year, after 23 years. Ticket buyers will, of course, get their money back from the retailer where they bought their tickets. We have no choice but to invite you all to the 64th Vitranc Cup next year."
The warm weather and especially the rains have not only melted the snow, which was mainly spread by machine by the workers on the track over the past few days, but the warmer ground has also started to melt the snow from the underside. Unfortunately, in these conditions, there is no means of maintaining a snow cover of a thickness and hardness that would allow a World Cup-level competition to take place.
The organizers of the evening event, the largest Slovenian Apres Ski, are expected to make a decision on the party tomorrow.
